With a vast and diverse workforce of more than 50,000 employees, UPMC understands that the lifestyles and family situations of its staff can differ greatly. As part of its commitment to maintain a competitive and diverse workforce, UPMC has expanded benefits eligibility to include the same-sex and opposite-sex domestic partners of its staff members.

Staff and their partners must meet UPMC's definition of a domestic partnership by completing the UPMC Affidavit of Domestic Partnership (PDF) and submitting the required documentation demonstrating the partnership has been in existence for at least 12 consecutive months. Staff may apply for domestic partner benefits within 30 days of meeting the one year eligibility requirement, becoming newly eligible to elect benefits due to a job status change, or the partner experiences a change in status, such as a loss in coverage. Staff approved for domestic partner benefits who do not have one the above qualifying events would be eligible for FMLA, bereavement, tuition assistance, and voluntary benefits. The approved domestic partner may be added to the medical, dental and life insurance benefits during the next annual open enrollment period.

Benefits available to eligible domestic partners include:

  • medical (including prescription drug coverage and vision)
  • dental
  • life insurance (a domestic partner or dependent of a domestic partner who is totally disabled is not eligible for supplemental coverage)
  • COBRA continuation coverage
  • FMLA leaves of absence
  • bereavement
  • tuition assistance
  • voluntary benefits (AFLAC products Interest-Sensitive, whole life insurance, and legal insurance)

Due to federal laws governing the administration of retirement plans and flexible spending accounts (FSAs), domestic partners are not eligible to participate in FSAs and retirement benefits as a surviving spouse.

If you have questions about domestic partner benefits, contact the UPMC Employee Service Center at 1-800-994-2752, option 3.
